All the warmth of camping: how to choose the best camping stove

We have dedicated many articles to camping "out of season"; we put this term between quotation marks because, as you will have understood, we consider autumn and winter as periods in which you can easily have a holiday in the open air without having to worry too much. We don't have to give up the contact with nature for fear of bad weather conditions, just have a few more precautions to make your tent comfortable. Nothing can help us to have a better camping experience if not the heat: let's see together what can be the best options to choose a portable stove.

Clear your head

The first thing to do is to figure out which type of stove is more suitable for us; there are many types on the market, let's try to clarify a little bit. The gas stove is one of the first that comes to mind: it is the traditional stove, powered by a replaceable methane cylinder. It has a long service life and in recent years has been equipped with very efficient safety systems. The cost is absolutely not high and maintenance is minimal, provided that the manufacturer's instructions are followed; however, there are also some cons, represented by the fact that this type of stove is generally quite large. Searching online you can find various types (infrared or ventilated) and the prices range between 60 and 150€. The electric stove is another type to consider. It is certainly less bulky than the gas stove, it is suitable for heating small rooms and has a high efficiency rate, especially if it is a halogen stove in which the heat is diffused by some fans that guarantee a great speed of heating. The cons are those easily imaginable: to work they need an electrical socket and are therefore only suitable if we are in a campsite or an equipped area. Prices vary between 35 and 150€.

The alternative that (maybe) you don't know about

Then there is a variation on the theme of the gas stove: the catalytic stove. It is heated by means of a porous silicon mat that emits heat thanks to the catalytic converter even after the flame has been extinguished. This ensures that higher temperatures are achieved than with the standard gas stove. Also in this case, the cons is given by the not exactly friendly dimensions and the price, higher than the other two types of stoves we talked about: between 70 and 200€.

In general, we recommend that you evaluate which stove to buy according to the size of your tent, the number of people who will occupy it and, logically, the temperatures you will have to face. If your holiday were to be in a camper or caravan, the variables would be drastically reduced and the only concern would be the size of the appliance.
